How does acupuncture work?

It is scientifically accepted that human beings are unique bio-energetic systems. For thousands of years, Oriental medicine has acknowledged that there is a vital force flowing through all things, which is called “Qi”. Qi is the divine spark within the body, the motivating force behind all of the physiological processes of the organism. Qi along with its physical counterpart, the blood, streams along pathways in the human body, which are related to the organs and the muscular/skeletal system. When the balance and free flow of Qi and Blood are disturbed due to trauma, poor diet, synthetic medications, stress, hereditary conditions, environmental factors or excessive emotional issues, pain or illness is most likely the result.

Oriental medicine focuses on correcting energetic imbalances by clearing up any obstruction to encourage an even flow of Qi. In turn, this stimulates the body's natural ability to heal itself.

How does acupuncture feel?

Prior to their first treatment, patients may assume that acupuncture is painful. Remarkably, almost all experience sensations of warmth or pressure; feelings that are pleasant and relaxing.

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, about the width of a hair, and always thoroughly sterilized. They are solid, disposable and nothing is injected through them. Over the centuries, refined needle insertion techniques have been developed enabling your acupuncturist to place a needle with little or no sensation.

In some cases, it is not necessary to use needles at all. For example, when treating young children, infants or sensitive adults, alternate effective techniques can be used. If you have a distinct fear of needles, discuss it with your acupuncturist. Then you, the patient and he can agree upon an acceptable strategy of treatment.

Is acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture and Oriental herbology are medically safe and well respected for their efficacy and lack of side effects when administered by a qualified and experienced practitioner. Balance Acupuncture and Herbs uses only pre-sterilized, disposable needles when administering an acupuncture treatment.
